Making your own favors for your wedding reception is one of the most cost effective as well as personal DIY projects that you can include in your wedding preparations. DIY wedding favors on a budget can be made to exactly suit your wedding style and colors but they can also be far more appropriate to commemorate your wedding than something you simply buy in a store.

The large number of choices in what to give as a wedding favor provides you the opportunity to show your creative side. Your personal spin will make your favors far more special and memorable for your guests. Your favors should reflect you and your spouse’s interests as well as the theme and colors of your wedding. But, don’t forget to choose something that your guests will enjoy and want to keep when they take it home.

Favors That Compliment Your Site

Fabric luggage tags
Fabric luggage tags are a meaningful favor for a destination wedding

If your guests are traveling to some special destination for your wedding a personalized luggage tag would be a useful and memorable gift. Every time they see it on their suitcase in the future they will remember your special wedding. Or, if there is something that the destination location of your wedding is famous for that would make the perfect favor.

A tropical island may be famous for a particular drink. A tiny bottle of the liquor plus the drink recipe would be an amazing favor.

A country inn may make its own jams and jellies, so a favor of a little jar of one of their specialties would be very memorable. Tiny sample jars will easily fit into your DIY wedding favors on a budget plan.

If you are having a beach wedding with a seaside theme, then using seashells in some way will be perfect favors for your wedding guests. Give your guests practical favors such as a mini fan to help keep them cool during the ceremony and reception. If you want to go a little bigger, you might consider colorful paper parasols.

Edible Favors

Wedding couples who are real food lovers, whether they like to prepare or just to eat food, should choose favors that reflect their love of all things food related.

Creating an edible favor would be the perfect fit if the wedding couple is into food preparation. Is there a snack that you particularly enjoy or are famous for that is also portable and not messy? Popcorn, cookies, or snack mix all make a great favor that your guests can snack on after the reception is over. Also, an edible favor eliminates the need for your guests to transport the favor home. They can just eat it!

Plants and Seeds

To reflect both the setting of your wedding and your love of flowers, consider a small plant or for more portability a packet of flower seeds.

Herb seed packets
Packages of herb seeds are a fun way for your guests to enjoy a memory of your wedding for a long time to come

A tiny succulent, potted in a little pail would perfectly reflect your rustic theme. Or a potted herb would be a treat for your guests’ kitchen. If you are concerned about your guests transporting live plants then substitute a packet of herb seeds in a cute little container. They can easily pack them and plant them at home. Seed packets are very economical and are a perfect fit for DIY wedding favors on a budget.

A little burlap bag tied with lace and filled with a few chocolates or jelly beans for late night nibbling would also stick with a rustic theme.

Candles

Homemade candles
Homemade candles are a romantic favor that guests will enjoy at home

A candle favor is a calming and romantic choice. Candles in a jar or other pretty container are easy to make and can match your colors or even your flowers if you include flower petals in the candle. When your guests light their candle, long after your wedding is past it will remind them of you and offer them a peaceful atmosphere at home.

Jar with hot chocolate mix
The perfect winter wedding favor is a jar of hot chocolate mix for your guests to enjoy later

Doesn’t everyone love hot chocolate? Create your own dry mix; package it attractively, include a recipe and you have given your guests a favor that they can cuddle up with when they get home.

Soaps are another item that is not hard to make. How about a soap making party with your attendants? The soaps can be customized to your wedding, reflecting the colors, the scents, the flowers, the location and the time of year. This is another favor that will remind your guests of you every time they use it.

Please Take The Favors Home

After you have spent time creating your favors, you do not want them left on the tables once the guests have gone home. If you have a DJ, make sure he reminds your guests several times what the favors are and to take them home.

If there is no DJ, a cute, colorful sign would serve the same purpose. Just make sure your guests know that the favors are for them.

It’s important to make your favors thoughtful and small but also affordable. Since you need one for every guest, the cost per favor must be a consideration. You don’t want to blow you budget on favors. After all, that is the reason for considering DIY favors in the first place.

You may be thinking that you just won’t have the time to make your favors. How about partially homemade then?

Jar of cookie mix
A great take home favor is a jar of mix for your favorite cookies that your guests can take home and enjoy baking

Purchase some amazing chocolate chip cookies. Put them in paper bags that you have hand decorated with stickers or by stamping or whatever your imagination suggests. The bag decorating could be another attendant party idea.

If you create the container that your favor is presented in you will cut costs and still make the favor personal even if you didn’t make it all yourself.
